Ken Hoagland is chairman of the FairTax national victory campaign, and of the Online Tax Revolt, which is organizing a march on Washington on April 15. He is author of The FairTax Solution.
Ken Hoagland says that The Online Tax Revolt, and especially their march to Washington, is open to every American who believes taxes and spending are out of control, harmful to our country and a threat to our nation’s future. Our economic future and that of future generations is at stake. Hoagland says we need taxes that are lower and a tax structure that’s fair.
Of course, protesting taxes is nothing new. But alternative ways to raise funds for the government have been proposed, and are gaining new supporters.
Hoagland and others support the FairTax, which would be a comprehensive proposal that replaces all federal income and payroll based taxes with an integrated approach, which includes a progressive national retail sales tax, a prebate (a flat payment) sent to all taxpayers to cover basic expenses, and thus ensure no American pays federal taxes on spending up to the poverty level, dollar-for-dollar federal revenue neutrality, and, through companion legislation, the repeal of the 16th Amendment, which established our present income tax system.
Others prefer a flat tax. A pure flat tax would tax everyone at the same rate, regardless of income. The tax form could be the size of a postcard, showing total income, and the taxes owed as the designated percentage of that income. Some would allow a tax exemption for household income below a cutoff level, which would be a deviation from the flat tax concept.
Details of the "virtual march" and specifics of how the "fair tax" would affect income, prices, employment, investment, and government revenues were discussed as listeners called in with questions.
